Let Roman settle for his Expertise, distinguish chests from skills, then choose between tokens, discounts and combat benefits with concrete starting targets.
Series contents Chapter 7 of 19
Understand your Masters and choose your next worthwhile upgrade. 13 guides and 6 practical reference sheets on Valora, Pan and Roman: a clear explanation, a next step, and the useful details close at hand.
See the series overviewRoman can be useful as soon as he settles in your Town. His chest Expertise does not wait for you to finish all four skills.
That is the first trap to avoid: fully developing Roman is expensive, but the full cost is not an entry fee for benefiting from his Expertise.
To identify the right skill: the numbers below follow the order of the four skills in the game tables, excluding Expertise. Use the icons and effects to recognize them. Descriptive English labels are not presented as unverified official button names.
The chests come from his relationship
Roman's Expertise can grant extra chests after an Arena battle.
| Stage | Expertise effect |
|---|---|
| Settles in your Town, Expertise 1 | 50% chance of 1 extra chest |
| Completed Affinity 40 milestone | 70% chance of 1 extra chest |
| Completed Affinity 50 milestone | 75% chance of 2 extra chests |
| Completed Affinity 100 milestone | 3 guaranteed extra chests |
Milestone 50 is a significant change: it improves both the chance of a reward and the number of chests when Expertise triggers. But if Roman has only just settled, it may not be your best next investment: compare how far away that milestone is with the smaller gains available from other Masters.
The chests can contain Mythic Hero Shards, Forge Hammers, Equipment XP or speedups. Their contents remain random. Guaranteed chests do not mean guaranteed shards.
The relationship also grants up to +15% Troop Attack and +15% Troop Defense in its Expedition context. Those bonuses are distinct from the Arena stat skills below.
Want more tokens?
Skill 2, available at Affinity 20, increases tokens from daily and weekly rewards. The bonus rises from +5% to +50%.
One possible first target is level 3. From level 1, it costs 900 Manuscripts and raises the bonus to +15%. You must still complete learning and meet the displayed requirements.
Do not mistake this for an automatic increase to every token earned from each duel. The descriptions concern daily and weekly rewards: check your rank and their base amounts.
Want better value in the shop?
Skill 3, available at Affinity 30, offers additional discounted items in the Arena Shop.
Two milestones change the number of items: level 6: 2 items at a 30% discount; level 10: 3 items at a 50% discount. Upgrading from level 1 to level 6 costs 4,500 Manuscripts and notably requires access unlocked at Affinity 50.
This is not a discount across the whole shop. You still need to want the offered items and have enough tokens. Do not invest solely to get a discount on items you would not otherwise buy.
Want to fight better? Distinguish the two skills
Skill 1 increases Arena escort Attack and Health. Do not confuse it with the hero skill.
Skill 4 increases Arena hero Attack and Health. At their maximum, each of these two skills reaches +20% for its relevant stats.
Finishing them costs far more than the first reward upgrades. If your primary goal is economic, do not develop them merely to fill all four slots. If your goal is to climb the Arena ranks, they may instead be worth comparing.
The fourth skill also has Skill Power requirements: progress in the other skills may become necessary.
What about Mithril?
Do not confuse saving tokens or finding a shop offer with Roman automatically producing Mithril. For any Mithril related purchase, check the actual item offered, its price, its limit and the conditions on your account. The full sources and thresholds are not documented well enough here to promise a universal income.
Three goals, not a race to the maximum
A few regular battles: having Roman settle for his Expertise may already make sense. Substantial Arena rewards: compare skill 2 with your token income. A longer term plan: examine relationship milestone 50 and skill 3's offers without automatically funding the combat skills.
Completing all four skills costs 81,000 Manuscripts. You do not have to spend that amount to benefit from the Expertise chests. The relationship requires Affinity and Emblems; learning skills is a separate decision.
Practical case: you want a chance of receiving two chests. Which screen should you check first?
Look at the relationship and its advancement toward milestone 50, then the Expertise tab. Buying Manuscripts for hero stats does not improve this ability.
