Governor Gear and Charms: Strategic Optimization Guide

At a glance: Governor Gear unlocks at Town Center level 22, and Governor Charms at level 25. The right approach is not to upgrade as soon as a button becomes available. Plan a complete sequence, account for the 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses, and execute it during an event that rewards the exact upgrade you intend to make.

Why Governor Gear matters so much

Governor Gear strengthens every relevant march for its troop type, rather than a single hero or formation. Its value therefore remains permanent across hero generations.

The system includes:

  • 6 gear pieces, with 2 pieces for each troop type;
  • 18 charms, with 3 charms on each of the 6 pieces;
  • individual bonuses from every piece;
  • set bonuses when at least 3 or 6 pieces reach the same threshold.

The two systems improve different stats:

SystemStats improvedPrimary role
Governor GearAttack and DefenseOverall power and set bonuses
CharmsHealth and LethalitySurvivability, damage, and troop specialization

Gear and charms should not automatically be treated as competing systems. Efficient progression looks for the best gain from the complete sequence while avoiding decisions that delay a future set threshold.

Unlock requirements and initial setup

Town Center level 22: Governor Gear

At Town Center 22, all six gear slots become available. Your first priority is to build a coherent baseline across all six pieces. Pushing one piece far ahead while several slots remain weak slows down set bonuses and often produces less useful power per resource spent.

Upgrades use three main resources:

  • Satin;
  • Gilded Threads;
  • Artisan’s Vision, required for advanced upgrades and usually harder to accumulate.

Artisan’s Vision first becomes necessary when progressing to Blue 2★. From that point onward, it often becomes the first major Governor Gear bottleneck.

Town Center level 25: Governor Charms

At Town Center 25, every gear piece can hold three charms. The 18 charms are assigned by troop type and use:

  • Charm Guides;
  • Charm Designs.

Unlike gear, charms do not have 3-piece or 6-piece set bonuses. Each level directly grants Health and Lethality to the relevant troop type.

One requirement is easy to miss: a gear piece must be enhanced at least once before its charms can be upgraded. The optimizer models this restriction.

Understanding the 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses

Set bonuses are central to Governor Gear optimization:

  • 3 pieces at the same threshold activate a Defense bonus for all three troop types;
  • 6 pieces at the same threshold activate an Attack bonus for all three troop types.

Every rarity, tier, and star combination is a separate set threshold. A higher piece counts toward lower thresholds. The 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses are evaluated independently.

Complete set-bonus list

At each threshold below, both bonuses have the same numerical value but affect different stats:

  • 3 pieces: Defense for Infantry, Cavalry, and Archers;
  • 6 pieces: Attack for Infantry, Cavalry, and Archers.

The rule to remember

Never judge an upgrade solely by the gain displayed on that piece. Consider:

  1. its individual gain;
  2. its true cost through the target;
  3. its contribution to a 3-piece bonus;
  4. its contribution to a 6-piece bonus;
  5. the later upgrades it could prevent by consuming scarce resources.

A piece with a slightly weaker individual return can therefore become the best purchase when it completes a set threshold.

The right priority depends on your objective

There is no universal order for every account. The correct decision depends on the activity, march composition, and inventory.

Optimizer objectiveHow the engine actually works
BalancedMathematically balances all 12 stats, without imposing a fixed Infantry, Archer, or Cavalry order.
BearValues Attack and Lethality, with a ×4 multiplier for Archers.
AttackValues Attack and Lethality for all three troop types, with no automatic Archer priority.
DefenseValues Defense and Health for all three troop types, with no automatic Infantry priority.
Next thresholdFinds the feasible path with the lowest normalized cost relative to the five inventory stocks toward the next starred 3-piece or 6-piece threshold. Charms are excluded from this objective.

These definitions describe the calculator. Troop priorities presented below are editorial specialization advice, not rules imposed by the engine.

For a versatile account

A reliable general-combat guideline is:

  1. Infantry Health and Defense;
  2. Archer Lethality and Attack;
  3. Cavalry afterward;
  4. override that order whenever another piece can complete a 3-piece or 6-piece bonus at a low cost.

This is not an absolute rule. A player focused on Bear Trap or rally damage will often gain more by pushing Archers. A player responsible for defense or garrison duty will value Infantry more highly.

An efficient charm strategy

The common trap is keeping all 18 charms perfectly equal at every level. It looks balanced, but it is not always the most resource-efficient approach.

Step 1: build a level 3 baseline

The early levels are relatively affordable. Gradually bringing useful charms to level 3 creates a solid baseline without committing every resource to one slot too early.

Step 2: prioritize level 3 → level 5

The targeted move from level 3 to level 5 is an excellent efficiency point:

  • level 3 → 4: +3 Health points and +3 Lethality points, for 80 Guides and 100 Designs;
  • level 4 → 5: +6 Health points and +6 Lethality points, for 100 Guides and 200 Designs;
  • total level 3 → 5: +9 Health points and +9 Lethality points, for 180 Guides and 300 Designs.

By comparison, taking three different charms from level 3 to level 4 also provides a gross total of +9 Health points and +9 Lethality points, but costs 240 Guides and 300 Designs. Concentrating one charm from level 3 to 5 therefore saves 60 Guides for the same total raw stat gain. Its value for the Balanced or Bear objective may still differ depending on the troop types and charm distribution involved.

In practice:

  • Bear: take Archer charms from level 3 to 5 first;
  • Attack: let the engine compare Attack and Lethality across all three troop types;
  • Defense: let the engine compare Defense and Health across all three troop types; strengthening Infantry may still be sensible editorial advice for a garrison specialist;
  • Balanced: follow the sequence calculated from the balance of all 12 stats;
  • avoid taking all 18 charms to level 4 before pushing selected charms to level 5.

After level 5, costs rise sharply. At that point, let the optimizer compare gains, available resources, and account specialization rather than following a fixed order.

The real bottlenecks

Gear: Artisan’s Vision

Satin is acquired regularly and Gilded Threads quickly become important, but Artisan’s Vision is usually the resource that slows advanced thresholds. Treat it as a strategic resource: do not spend it on a secondary piece simply because an upgrade is available.

The true bottleneck is still whichever resource blocks the complete recommended sequence. Having enough Artisan’s Vision but too few Gilded Threads will not complete the threshold. Track all three stocks together.

Charms: Designs

Advanced levels require increasingly large numbers of Charm Designs. Over time, Designs often become more restrictive than Guides. When both are offered at comparable value, Designs are generally the better preventive purchase.

Do not buy blindly, however. If the optimizer shows that the immediate upgrade is blocked by Guides, buying more Designs will not unlock it.

Choice chests

A chest that lets you select a resource is more valuable while it remains unopened. Until the upgrade sequence has been decided, opening it turns a flexible resource into one that may not be useful.

The correct method:

  1. enter your inventory in the optimizer;
  2. select your objective;
  3. review the complete sequence;
  4. identify the exact shortage;
  5. open only the number of chests required.

What to buy first

Value depends on kingdom age and available shops, but this hierarchy prevents most common mistakes.

For Governor Gear

  1. Artisan’s Vision when offered at a reasonable price;
  2. Gilded Threads when they block the next threshold;
  3. Satin only according to the real shortage;
  4. flexible chests kept unopened until the final calculation.

In the Swordland Shop, Artisan’s Vision is often a strong early purchase. Once it becomes available through another recurring shop—such as the Alliance Championship Shop, depending on kingdom age—Swordland currency can be redirected toward the charm resources the account actually lacks.

For Charms

  1. Charm Designs to prepare for advanced levels;
  2. Charm Guides when the next level specifically lacks them;
  3. never buy an item solely to empty a shop currency;
  4. do not sacrifice a unique high-priority shop resource for a small immediate gain.

For paying players

As editorial guidance, the most useful packs are generally those that complete a full sequence or a 3-piece/6-piece threshold, rather than those displaying the largest number of items. Before buying, compare the pack contents with the exact shortage calculated by the module.

A pack is usually poor value if much of its content remains unused after reaching the objective.

When to upgrade: wait for the right events

Unless you need immediate combat power, save materials until an event rewards the exact action you plan to take. Relevant tasks can appear during:

  • Hall of Governors;
  • Strongest Governor;
  • Kingdom of Power / KvK Preparation;
  • certain Armament Competition, alliance-mission, or temporary-event rotations.

Gear and charms are separate tasks

Read the exact task wording before spending:

  • “Increase Governor Charm max score” rewards charm upgrades;
  • “Increase Governor Gear max score” rewards gear upgrades.

Upgrading gear during a charm task—or the reverse—can award zero points, even though both systems appear on the same game screen.

Days and coefficients can change with the rotation, kingdom age, or a game update. The live task panel in game is always the final reference.

Look for double or triple scoring

The best timing is when the same upgrade scores in several simultaneous events. A daily KvK task may overlap with a Strongest Governor stage and a secondary competition.

Before upgrading:

  1. open every active event;
  2. verify the exact task wording;
  3. check which reward milestones remain reachable;
  4. calculate the minimum amount to spend;
  5. stop at the last worthwhile milestone.

Reaching two or three reasonable milestones is often better than emptying your inventory for an uncertain ranking.

When not to wait

An immediate upgrade can be justified if it:

  • completes a 3-piece or 6-piece bonus before an important battle;
  • significantly strengthens a decisive garrison or rally;
  • secures an alliance objective worth more than the future event points.

The real question is not “Should I always wait?” but “Does the immediate military value exceed the rewards I would lose?”

Use this process before every upgrade session:

  1. Update all 6 gear pieces and 18 current charms in the module.
  2. Enter every available resource without opening choice chests.
  3. Select the real objective: Balanced, Bear, Attack, Defense, or Next threshold.
  4. Review the best sequence found by the engine, not only the first upgrade.
  5. Check the 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses reached at the end of the sequence.
  6. Wait for a compatible task and read its exact wording.
  7. Open only the chests needed to cover the calculated shortage.
  8. Perform upgrades in the recommended order.
  9. Stop spending at the last worthwhile reward milestone.
  10. Update the inventory and save the new configuration.

Calculate an upgrade sequence for your objective

The most expensive mistakes

Upgrading whichever piece shows an available button

An available upgrade is not necessarily an efficient one. It may consume the resource needed by a piece that would have completed a set bonus.

Keeping every piece perfectly equal

Visual balance is not always economic balance. Respect set thresholds, but temporary specialization can be stronger when it matches the objective.

Ignoring 3-piece and 6-piece bonuses

A set bonus can make a sequence that looks weaker far more valuable for the full account.

Taking every charm from level 3 to level 4

This uniform progression wastes Guides compared with a targeted level 3 to level 5 push.

Opening choice chests in advance

Your needs change after every threshold. A chest opened too early can no longer adapt to the next bottleneck.

Confusing Governor Gear with Hero Gear

The materials and event tasks are different. Always verify the exact system named by the task.

Spending on the wrong event day

The presence of a major event is not enough. Only the exact task wording confirms that the expenditure will score.

Chasing an overly expensive ranking

Permanent materials are often worth more than a few extra positions. Set a spending cap before you begin.

Copying a universal priority

“Infantry first” can be sensible for defense, but it is poor advice for a player whose only goal is maximum Bear Trap damage. The objective must determine the priority.

Quick strategies by player profile

F2P or low spender

  • stockpile resources between events;
  • prioritize rare, predictable bottleneck materials;
  • specialize charms around your main activity;
  • target reward milestones, not expensive rankings;
  • complete 3-piece/6-piece bonuses before spreading resources too thinly.

Bear-focused player

  • prioritize Archers;
  • favor Lethality and Attack over defensive stats;
  • take Archer charms from level 3 to 5 before raising everything uniformly to level 4;
  • retain enough materials for events that score charm or gear upgrades.

Balanced PvP player

  • durable Infantry to hold the front line;
  • offensive Archers to turn that additional combat time into damage;
  • Cavalry after those two priorities;
  • complete set bonuses whenever their marginal cost becomes favorable.

Defense or garrison player

  • prioritize Infantry Charm Health and Gear Defense;
  • the 3-piece bonus is especially useful for overall Defense;
  • do not completely neglect Archers: surviving without dealing enough damage remains inefficient.

Advanced player

  • compare gain per unit of resource, not only level;
  • include the value of upcoming 3-piece/6-piece bonuses;
  • keep flexible chests to solve the final bottleneck;
  • plan several events ahead, especially KvK and Strongest Governor.

FAQ

Should I upgrade gear or charms first?

First claim any nearby, inexpensive gear set bonuses. Charms can then deliver excellent returns, especially through targeted level 3 to level 5 upgrades. The right choice still depends on your inventory and the cost of the next gain.

Should Infantry always come first?

No. Infantry is the natural editorial priority for defense and balanced PvP. For Bear Trap or an offensive specialization, Archers will generally come first.

Should I upgrade as soon as resources are available?

No, unless you need immediate military power. Wait for a task that rewards Governor Gear or Governor Charms specifically, ideally across multiple events at once.

Which resource should I buy first?

Artisan’s Vision for advanced gear and Charm Designs for charms are generally the tightest resources. The best purchase is still whichever item covers the shortage in the next complete sequence.

Why does the optimizer sometimes recommend a less important piece?

It may complete a 3-piece or 6-piece bonus, preserve a scarce resource, or enable a more valuable overall sequence.

Conclusion

Efficient progression is not necessarily the fastest or most uniform. It aims to convert every resource into useful gains, complete the right set thresholds, and benefit from events without waste.

Before any major expenditure, enter your current setup, inventory, and objective in the KingSlayer Labs optimizer. The module then displays the best sequence found for the selected objective and entered resources, remaining shortages, and projected post-upgrade stats.

Updated September 1, 2026: shop, pack, and event-rotation advice is dated editorial guidance, not an engine rule. The live task text in game always takes precedence.

Data reliability: the costs and stats used by KingSlayer Labs come from spreadsheets supplied to the project and are not certified by Century Games. The Green and Blue set-bonus values still need in-game confirmation.

Calculation limits: for complex inventories, the search may be capped at 256 states and 200,000 evaluations. The module returns the best sequence found within those limits and cannot always guarantee the mathematical global optimum.
